Ishikawa Toraji travels to USA and Europe in the twenties were essentials to his futuristic work not belonging to the Shin Hanga nor the Sosaku Hanga movements. The three boat scenes show an amazing skill to combine colors, creating fascinating moving lines. Probably drawn back from a trip in occupied China these prints almost seem to have been created with the help of a computer. They would feel at home combined with a 1930 modernist cabinet covered in macassar ebony wood! Good taste at its top!
